Mumbai occupies a peninsula on India’s western coast along the Arabian Sea, centered on one of the subcontinent’s busiest natural harbours.
It has grown into India’s commercial and financial centre, with the Gothic Victorian Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as a key landmark.
The city contrasts historic districts like Fort and affluent zones such as Colaba and Malabar Hill with outer suburbs where about 60% live in informal settlements. Recent additions like the Coastal Road Promenade extend Mumbai’s seafront walking paths beyond the older Marine Drive route.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
The Gothic Victorian railway station is the headquarters of Central Railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai’s historic Fort area.
Marine Drive Promenade
This 3.25 km seafront walkway, opened in 1940, runs from Nariman Point to the base of Malabar Hill, lined with art deco buildings and city skyscrapers.
Coastal Road Promenade
Opened in summer 2025, this new promenade offers 5.25 km of seafront paths with plans to reach 7.5 km, connecting key parts of the Mumbai coastline.
